Tryavna is formed as the geographical center of the region still in the 18 century. The earliest evidence for the existence of the village are from the time of the Thracian tribes who inhabited the Balkan peninsula. In the late 19 th century town of Tryavna is the undisputed cultural and economic center of the area.
Development of crafts during the Bulgarian Revival in Tryavna leads not only to the economic upturn, but also the creation of the oldest art school in Bulgaria - Tryavna. Original and unique carving crafts, iconography, Construction form the nature and significance of Tryavna School of Art, whose works are distributed throughout the Ottoman Empire, Romania, Serbia and Russia.

After ̉he Freedom of Bulgaria in 1878 the municipality started industrial production of woolen textiles, the first factory was opened early in 1883. The first half of 20 century to create a number of industrial enterprises in key industries that are related to the processing of wood, furniture, textiles, fruit processing, metal products, production of electricity.
In the second half of the 20 th century significant development occurs in volume and quality of industrial capacity in mechanical engineering, textil and knitwear industry, the production of heat, furniture and woodworking.

Development of tourist services in Tryavna Municipality began in the early 20-ies in the town of Tryavna and Plachkovtsi. Currently the municipality has built recreation facilities with over 1250 beds. Development of tourism as a sector of the economy of the municipality contributes to the favorable temperate climate with cool summers and mild winters.
